What Is Tea Deep Processing? A Buyer’s Guide to China’s Tea Ingredient Industry
A practical map of Chinese matcha, tea powders, instant tea and standardized tea extracts—what they are, how they differ and what international buyers should verify.
Short answer
“Tea deep processing” is a useful industry term for turning tea leaves into ingredients with a different physical form, composition or application performance. It can include finely milled whole-leaf powders, instant tea, liquid concentrates, standardized extracts and separated tea constituents.
It is not one harmonised international regulatory category. A powder sold as a food ingredient, a beverage base or a dietary-supplement ingredient may require different specifications, documents and market-access checks even when all three begin with Camellia sinensis.
For a buyer, the first question is therefore not “Which factory has the lowest price?” It is:
What exactly is the ingredient, how was it made, where will it be used, and what evidence must support that use?
A practical product map
The following map is more useful for sourcing than putting every product under the single label “tea powder”.

These groups overlap commercially, but they should not be treated as interchangeable product identities.
China’s current standards already recognise several distinct categories. The national standards platform lists separate standards for matcha (GB/T 34778-2017), solid instant tea (GB/T 31740.1-2015), tea polyphenols (GB/T 31740.2-2015) and theaflavins (GB/T 31740.3-2015). A separate current standard, GB/T 40633-2021, covers tea-processing vocabulary.
These standards help describe products in China. They do not, by themselves, establish that a product is suitable or legally compliant in the buyer’s destination market.
Three processing routes buyers should distinguish
1. The leaf remains the product
In whole-leaf powders, the buyer consumes the milled tea material rather than only the water-soluble fraction. Particle size affects mouthfeel and suspension, but fine grinding alone does not prove that a product is matcha.
For matcha, buyers should examine the tea material, cultivation and processing description, sensory quality and product specification together. A bright photograph or the word “ceremonial” is not a substitute for product identity or evidence.
2. The tea is brewed, concentrated and dried
Instant tea normally begins with an aqueous extraction or brewing step. The liquor is clarified, concentrated and dried, often by spray drying or freeze drying. The commercial product is mainly the soluble material recovered from the tea liquor.
The manufacturing decisions influence:
- hot- or cold-water solubility;
- clarity and sediment;
- aroma retention and bitterness;
- colour in the final beverage;
- bulk density and flow;
- whether carriers or processing aids are present.
An instant tea powder should therefore be evaluated in the buyer’s real water quality, temperature, concentration and formulation—not only in a supplier’s demonstration glass.
3. Selected constituents are concentrated or standardised
Tea extracts may be concentrated around polyphenols, catechins, EGCG, theaflavins or other specified constituents. The extraction solvent, purification steps, carrier system and analytical method become part of the ingredient’s commercial identity.
Two products labelled “50% tea polyphenols” may still differ in catechin profile, caffeine, solubility, taste, residual solvent, carrier content and test method. The percentage on the specification is a starting point, not a complete performance description.
Why the intended application changes the specification
There is no universally “best” tea ingredient. Suitability depends on the final product.
Beverage and food applications
A beverage developer may prioritise solubility, sediment, colour, flavour release, pH behaviour and heat stability. A bakery buyer may care more about colour retention after heating, bitterness, dosage and interaction with fat or sugar. A foodservice brand may need easy dispersion and repeatable preparation across stores.
Dietary-supplement applications
A supplement buyer may place greater weight on botanical identity, plant part, extract ratio, marker-compound assay, analytical methods, contaminants and amount per serving. In the United States, FDA distinguishes dietary supplements from conventional foods and requires supplement-specific identity and labelling; botanical extracts can be dietary ingredients, but the finished product’s intended representation and labelling matter. Target-market restrictions
The same extract can face different conditions in different markets. For example, the European Union’s Regulation (EU) 2022/2340 sets conditions and warning requirements for foods containing green tea extracts with EGCG, including a requirement that a daily portion contain less than 800 mg EGCG. This does not mean every green tea beverage is regulated in the same way; the regulation itself distinguishes certain aqueous extracts comparable to traditional infusions.
The practical lesson is simple: determine the destination, application, serving level and claims before approving the ingredient.
What an international buyer should define before contacting suppliers
A useful sourcing brief should answer at least these questions:
- What is the finished application? Beverage, bakery, confectionery, supplement, foodservice or another use?
- Where will it be sold? Country or region, and through which regulatory category?
- What is the required ingredient identity? Whole-leaf powder, instant tea, extract or standardised constituent?
- Which performance matters? Taste, colour, solubility, suspension, assay, stability or another measurable result?
- What safety and certification requirements apply? Pesticide residues, heavy metals, microbiology, residual solvents, organic, halal, kosher or customer-specific limits?
- What is the commercial range? Sample quantity, trial order, annual volume, packaging, target timing and Incoterm?
- What must be excluded or disclosed? Carriers, sweeteners, colours, flavours, processing aids, allergens or genetically modified inputs?
Without this brief, a supplier list may be long but commercially meaningless.
Evidence to request from a potential supplier
Documents should be relevant to the exact product and manufacturing site—not collected as a generic certificate folder.
A first evidence package may include:
- legal entity and actual manufacturing-site details;
- product specification and ingredient statement;
- process-flow description;
- representative certificate of analysis with test methods;
- botanical source and plant part;
- disclosure of carriers, additives and extraction solvents;
- relevant contaminant and microbiological results;
- certificate names, issuing bodies, validity and product/site scope;
- packaging, shelf life and storage conditions;
- sample and production-batch traceability;
- export experience and available shipment documents.
The buyer should separate four things in the research record: verified evidence, supplier statements, unresolved questions and items requiring independent laboratory or regulatory review.
Manufacturer, trader or solution provider?
A producer is not automatically the best partner, and a trader is not automatically unsuitable.
A manufacturer may offer stronger process control but limited export communication. A specialist trader may coordinate several factories and documents more effectively. An application-oriented ingredient company may buy base material and add formulation or technical-service value.
The important questions are:
- Who manufactures the product?
- Who owns the specification?
- Who controls batch release?
- Who signs the contract and receives payment?
- Which activities are performed in-house or outsourced?
- Can the supplier explain changes between the sample and commercial production?
Supplier role should be disclosed and evaluated against the project—not guessed from a website.
A better way to compare quotations
Two quotations are comparable only when they refer to the same:
- ingredient identity and composition;
- assay and test method;
- application grade;
- certification and testing scope;
- packaging and order quantity;
- trade term, payment basis and delivery point.
A lower price may reflect a different raw material, carrier, assay basis, testing package, manufacturing role or commercial term. Price intelligence starts with specification alignment.
The core buying principle
China has established production categories for matcha, instant tea and several tea extracts. The sourcing challenge is not simply finding a company that uses the right product name.
The real task is to connect four elements:
identity → application → evidence → target-market requirements
When these four elements are aligned, supplier screening, sample evaluation and quotation comparison become much more reliable.

Supplier research and procurement coordination do not replace accredited laboratory testing, formulation validation, legal review, customs advice or a regulatory assessment in the destination market.
